Worlds Apart in Standard Essential Patents: National Rules for Global Standards?

Date

David Muus, Head of Licensing Program at Sisvel, will participate in the workshop "Worlds Apart in Standard Essential Patents: National Rules for Global Standards?", jointly organized by the EUI Centre for a Digital Society and WIPO.

The event gathers institutional and industry leaders to discuss the global state of play in SEP administration, licensing, and enforcement.

ICT standards like 6G, Wi-Fi 7, and HEVC drive economic growth by enabling innovations such as IoT and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, tensions persist in licensing SEPs—critical for implementing these standards—due to varying national and regional approaches.

The workshop will explore key questions, including:

  • The role of SDOs in creating global standards.

  • How IP offices can support technology adoption.

  • Jurisdictional differences in SEP dispute resolution.

  • The evolving landscape of SEP licensing in IoT.

This initiative builds on WIPO’s 2024-2026 SEP strategy and highlights efforts to align global policies with the challenges of cross-industry ICT standards.
